Paid Android apps for SA?
Posted by Dennis Burford in Android
It seems South Africa may be in line to receive support for paid Android apps in the near future. This is great news for two reasons:
- Users get access to quality apps. Not that some free apps aren’t great, but sometimes you want the premium version. Or at least the choice.
- Developers can now make some cash creating apps targeted at the local market.
I wonder if Android will follow Nokia’s lead and allow payment via SMS checkout. That solution is rather neat and well suited to the SA market.

SMS checkout is pretty cool, but I suspect it’s mostly used by certain demographic profiles which I think are a bit different to those who own Android devices? Just speculation of course..
Provided it doesn’t cost more, I’d actually prefer to have my Android app purchases on my phone bill. There is still the choice of paying directly with paypal/card, but at least there would be another option.
For those of you with rooted phones or willing to do it, you can use Market Enabler. Works a treat. ( http://code.google.com/p/market-enabler/ )
Just read this blog post dated 30 September…

No paid apps just yet it seems. Come on Android…we’re worth the effort.
